Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and I believe that lovers are already out there thinking of how to show their love and appreciation to their loved ones. Valentine’s Day is known all over the world as a day of love and the entire period is dotted with red and white and exchange of gifts it is almost like Christmas except the mascot is a cute baby with wings instead of a big bearded man.

The legend of Valentine comes from ancient Rome. The celebration of Valentine’s Day is based on at least one Roman known as Valentine or Valentinus even though some schools of thought suggest these two stories are about the same person, so I would try and narrate the three angles in this post.

Apparently, a very smart Roman Emperor; Claudius II decided that men that were single made beter soldiers than the married ones. He believed that single men would be all committed to the Roman cause for world domination and not bother about returning home to their families the way that married men would, so he decreed that marriage was abolished for young unmarried men. St. Valentine decided that this decree was unjust so he continued to join lovers in secret. He lost his head because of this.

Another legend claims that the man called valentine was secretly releasing the Christians imprisoned in the Roman cells. When his treachery was discovered, he was tried for treason and sentenced to die. During his imprisonment, he helped treat the daughter of his jailer who then fell in love with him and they professed their love through secret letters. Before he died, he signed one of his last letters with “from your valentine”; a greeting still very much popular today.

There are several historians that suggest that all these stories may have been the same man that rescued the Christians and conducted secret marriages and fell in love in jail. The history of the Catholic Church however acknowledges the existence of at least three saints that were called Valentine or Valentinus. The celebration of love is named after the benevolent acts of these individuals although the date was chosen to continue a roman tradition.

While some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial–which probably occurred around A.D. 270–others claim that the Christian church may have decided to place St. Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February in an effort to “Christianize” the pagan celebration of Lupercalia. Celebrated at the ides of February, or February 15, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus.

With the continuous rise of Christianity, the Catholic Church deemed that the pagan festival of Lupercilia was “un-Christian” so Pope Gelasius declared February 14 as St. Valentine’s day. During the middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds’ mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of Valentine’s Day should be a day for romance.

By the 1400s, the celebration of Valentine’s Day was already synonymous with romance and by that time Valentines (the names given to the poems, gifts and presents exchanged between lovers) were very popular. The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. The tradition of exchanging valentines exist up till this day
