The Super Eagles of Nigeria have landed at the Mineralnye Vody Airport in Stravropol Krai, Russia. The Nigerians arrived in Russia as they plan to take on Croatia on Saturday for their opening Group D fixture at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The Super Eagles would also take on Iceland and Argentina in the remaining Group D games.
The team landed in Russia on Monday night amid rumors of a camp rift and delayed flight. The Super Eagles were dressed in native attires that are traditional to southern region of Nigeria. They were clad in white Kaftans with green threaded patterns and white trousers. The players looked very fashionable and dapper in green and white, the official colors of the Nigerian Football Federation.
The Super Eagles became the first African nation to qualify for the showdown and it is the sixth time that Nigeria would be participating at FIFA’s elite competition. They have reached the second round of the competition in 1994, 1998 and 2014 losing all ties to European teams. Nigeria debuted at the World Cup in 1994 and they have failed to qualify for the competition just once (2006) since their debut.
The Super Eagles flew in from Austria after spending a week working on their training and preparations for the World Cup. In Austria, Nigeria played the Czech Republic and lost by a lone goal making the Eagles fly into the world cup in poor form. They failed to win any of the world cup warm up friendlies after beating Poland in March.
The first game against Croatia will take place at the Kaliningrad Stadium on Saturday and the super eagles would lodge at the Sanatorium Istochnik. There are training facilities available for the Nigerians at the Essentuki Arena where they would be preparing for all their group games. The super Eagles would hope to proceed to the next round and possibly the quarter finals.
