The Kaduna-Abuja Expressway was blocked by some protesters from the Sabon Gaya village in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna state yesterday evening.

The protest was a peaceful march to decry the poor level of security and basic amenities in the area. The village is located about 20 kilometres from the Kaduna Metropolis and is famous for being the location of the NYSC orientation Camp permanent site for Kaduna State.

The Youth and inhabitants of the village turned out to protest the death of one of their contemporaries who was shot and killed yesterday afternoon. The deceased was a member of the civilian joint task force and he had volunteered to help keep the village secured.

They barricaded the road to get the attention of the government thereby leading to heavy traffic jam on the road as the vehicles traveling into Kaduna City were stopped and no vehicles could travel towards Abuja.

The protest was held to call the attention of the federal and state government to the increasing rate of robbery, murder, kidnaping and all sorts of crime on the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway. Since the beginning of the year, there has been several reports of serious crimes committed on the highway even in broad daylight.

The youth lamented about the high level of security and have called upon the government as they are supposed to be responsible for the safety and security of all life and property. They refused to remove the roadblocks until someone from the government assured them that their village would receive maximum security and protection and events like this would not occur again.

Speaking to the news correspondents on the site, they said “we are not fighting or being violent, all we want is a solution to our problems. Government should not only come to us when they need our votes, they should help us put an end to the incessant robbery attacks, killings and kidnappings among other crimes in our area.”
