The Kaduna State government has disclosed that a children’s park would be built on plot 11b, Sambo road, Ungwan-Rimi in Kaduna City. The address used to be the location of the state secretariat of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Kaduna before it was demolished earlier in the year.

The property that once belonged to Sen. Suleiman Hunkuyi was seized by the Kaduna Geographical Information Service (KADGIS) in February. The demolition was first perceived as a political ploy by the Kaduna State governor against certain members of his party with whom he disagreed. Sen. Hunkuyi is one of the legislators that defected from the APC yesterday afternoon.

The public relations officer of the Kaduna State Urban Planning and Development Agency (KASUPDA) disclosed that the construction of a children’s park would begin on the site.  “You recall that when the property was demolished, the ownership was revoked and the plot was handed over to us, so we are now building a children’s park there,” Mr Garba said.

KNM gathered that Sen. Hunkuyi filed a lawsuit against the KDSG for unlawful seizure of his personal property. The state officials alleged that the senator did not settle the ground rent for several years. Sen. Hunkuyi demanded that he be paid N10 Billion naira in damages for the demolition. Justice Lawal Bello of a Kaduna State High Court dismissed the case against the government as he declared that the suit lacked merit.

The former APC member has appealed the case at the Court of Appeal in Kaduna in order to get a reversal of the High Court’s ruling. The case would be heard at the Kaduna court of appeal on August 2nd, 2018 but the Kaduna State government already started breaking ground for construction of the park.

Responding to the act, Sen. Hunkuyi described the action of KDSG as an act of impunity. The action is a threat to democracy and the rule of law and should be condemned by all. If it is Hunkuyi today, it can be any other person tomorrow,” he said.
