The Nigeria world cup home jersey designed by Nike in partnership with The Native was released officially yesterday, 1st of June. The kit was available in all Nike retail outlets including the online store but all pieces available were sold out within three minutes. The jersey was judged to be the most attractive jersey at the world cup according to a Sky Sports poll when Nike released the promotional images a few weeks ago.

The home kit is based loosely on the Adidas 1994 kit that Nigeria wore in the United States for the 1994 world cup. Nike also designed tracksuits, jackets, caps and wears for the Nigerian supporters and the rest of the world that would be supporting the Super Eagles in Russia. The kit was modeled by Nigeria and Arsenal star, Alex Iwobi and superstar musician, WizKid. Several non-Nigerians have thus declared their support for the super eagles through the world cup partly because of the kit.

Nigerians on social media have criticized the price of the kit with several of them inciting that the N41000 price tag was double the minimum wage of the country and the N70000 for the tracksuit was ridiculous. Nevertheless, there were long queues at Nike stores all over the world minutes before the release and Nike announced that the jersey was sold out after a few minutes. Retail stores in Nigeria selling the kit also took to social media to disclose that the jersey was sold out limiting the options of latecomers to inferior “fake” jerseys.

The Super Eagles play the Three Lions of England in a friendly game at Wembley, London later today before traveling to Austria to finalize their World Cup preparations. The Super Eagles are yet to submit a final list of players that would make the trip to Russia as Nigerian fans hope that they can come out of a group that includes Argentina, Iceland, and Croatia and get far in the knockout rounds. It would be a shame if the most attractive jersey at the world cup does not live to see the latter stages of the competition.
