The honorable minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared that the president has approved the purchase of 17 additional locomotives for the Kaduna-Abuja rail line.

This announcement was made after the monthly project steering committee on the $1.5 billion Lagos-Ibadan rail project. The minister said that the decision was made in order to accommodate the demands of the passengers that ply the Kaduna-Abuja rail road. He also stated that the approval was granted in order to connect Nigeria with some of its immediate land locked, neighboring countries that could use the port in Nigeria to import the materials that they need.

“We realized that we had competitors from our land-locked neighbors, competitors such as Ghana, Togo, and Benin. These landlocked countries are importing through these countries because we don’t have rail lines that go through them. In order to address this situation, Mr. President has approved that a rail line will go to Maragi in Niger Republic,” he explained.

“But that rail line which will come from Kano to Maragi in Niger has to pass through some other towns and cities. The rail line will pass through Kazaure and then Daura before linking to Jibya and then Maragi. Is it that when the rail gets to Kazaure, it jumps through the air over Daura? No, it has to pass through Daura to get to Jibya and Maragi. It is quite unfortunate that people read meanings to a rail line going to Daura” he concluded.

He also confirmed that two of the coaches purchased have been received and additional ten coaches will be received by December and all these coaches will be deployed to Kaduna-Abuja rail services.
