Kawo Flash Flood

A flash flood has hit the streets of Kawo, Kaduna North local government area of Kaduna state. The flood was a result of the torrential rain that fell in Kaduna over the weekend. The residents of the area and motorists coming from Kano and Zaria spend hours stuck in traffic.

The Kawo underpass is an important junction linking Kaduna metropolis with the NAF Base, Mando and Zaria road. The flash flood hindered movements of all vehicles because each vehicle had to wade through the body of water carefully. It is believed that the indiscriminate dump of refuse by the residents caused the flood. However, locals in the area believe that a lack of proper drainage caused the issue.

When KNM spoke with KASTELEA operatives on site assisting motorists, they claimed that they did not know the cause of the flash flood. In fact, they seemed clueless about solving the problem because they were only there to manage it. The area is still flooded today. Kaduna state government have mobilized personnel from the Kaduna State Environmental Protection Authority (KEPA) to resolve the issues. Motorists, however, spoke with frustration after being stuck in the traffic gridlock for hours. The Kaduna state government were urged by residents to take the flood as a warning sign. They encouraged KDSG to ensure that such events do not happen again here or any part of Kaduna

Alhaji Yusuf Rigasa, the General Manager of KEPA described the body of water on the road as a flash flood that was caused by obstruction of drainage. “What we are experiencing is a flash flood as a result of heavy downpour which pushed the waste collection point and blocked the water passage we want to use this medium to appeal to our traders and residents in Kawo to use the waste bins we have provided.” He also informed that Kaduna state would arrange for water pumps to remove the water from the road and evacuate the blockage of the drainage.
