Boko Haram: US Sell Warplanes And Weapons To Nigeria

The Pentagon has informed the United States Congress of the sale of 12 Super Tucano A-29 ground attack aircraft and weapons to fight the Boko Haram sect and their insurgency in the northern part of Nigeria. The Pentagon communicated the sale of the 12 ground attack aircraft valued at $593m to the US Congress on Monday.

The Super Tucano A-29 is an agile, propeller-driven plane with reconnaissance and surveillance as well as attack capabilities will help in fighting the Boko Haram insurgents. The insurgency has claimed many lives and led to several destructions of property especially in the north eastern parts of Nigeria in the last few years.

The Federal government of Nigeria is expected to receive a formal notification within weeks to set in motion the deal with Nigeria. The deal would call for Nigeria purchasing other aircraft with targeting gear and the country would pay up to $600m.

During the President Barack Obama led administration, several US outlets encouraged the US government not to go ahead with the sale of 12 attack aircraft to Nigeria.
